I have a Nikon D7100 and my intervalometer does work correctly when I have the dial set to Mirror Up. <br /><br />If I set the exposure count to 40, I will get only 20 images. The intervalometer sends the command to open the shutter, but the command makes the mirror go up, then it waits the exposure time, then the next command actually opens the shutter, then the process repeats. I ended up turning that dial off of the Mirror Up setting. Now I get 40 images.
